So, I posted a comment not too long ago on a good friends blog in response to some hazing I received. My comment had absolutely nothing to do with their blog (which I read), but I wanted to tease them right back-mostly because that is the kind of relationship we have.
After I posted it, I was pleased enough with my level of cleverness, and moved on. My teasing was not about anything personal...just something I found amusing, I really didn't think it would hurt anyone's feelings. However as the day wore on and onto the next day I started to feel awkward about it.
Why? Well the post that I commented on had about 15 other people who commented on it also, mentioning how they were crying from the tender heartfelt *whatevers* that they felt upon reading the original blog. Then there was my comment which was in stark contrast, and seemed insensitive after reading the others in the list.
I started to feel that my comments may be misconstrued by other readers who were thinking i was being an insensitive jerk (I'm fairly sure my wife feels that way about me sometimes too...is there a pattern?), although I was fairly confident my good friends would get a laugh. But then i started thinking "Will they?" I figured that any amount of teasing I should be doing, should be done in person. After all, I think that all of us have been offended by an email or text we misunderstood. I realized that no matter how understanding the relationship is, sometimes things are read and they take on an entirely different meaning than originally intended.
I got paranoid, and took it down in a moment of weakness.
Then I got called on the fact that I took it down.
Either way, you can't win. But I have decided that any form of teasing coming from yours truly, will probably be done not in a public forum.
